Senator Skelos is currently serving his twelfth term in the New York State Senate. In 1995, Senator Skelos was appointed to the position of Deputy Majority Leader. As such, he played a leading role in the development of the Senate's legislative agenda and governmental policy.  In 2008, Senator Skelos was elected to the position of Majority Leader.

Throughout his tenure, Senator Skelos has authored hundreds of laws and created meaningful new programs for the citizens of New York State. Among the most notable, Senator Skelos drafted New York State's Sex Offender Registration Act (commonly referred to as "Megan's Law"), the repeal of the New York City Non-Resident Earnings Tax (often called the Commuter Tax) and created the landmark Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage Program (EPIC).

Senator Skelos continues to work with the New York State Bar Association and Statewide business organizations to improve New York's economic prosperity. To this end, he has sponsored legislation extensively revising the Business Corporation Law, remedying accounting difficulties experienced by the insurance industry and promoting the competitiveness of New York State businesses through the expanded use of stock options. Moreover, Senator Skelos wrote new laws amending the CPLR to provide that an offer of compromise in a civil suit is inadmissible, conforming State and federal trademark statutes and providing that electronic communications (e-mail) may be privileged.

As the Co-Chair of the Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment, Senator Skelos is responsible for redrawing boundaries for the State's Senate, Assembly and Congressional districts. In addition, he is an elected member of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation's Board of Directors and the New York State Senate's representative and Long Island's lone voice on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Capital Plan Review Board. In May 2000, Senator Skelos and the three other members of the MTA Capital Plan Review Board approved a five-year $17.1 billion plan which includes the first major MTA system's expansion in over 50 years.
